Peptides are short polymers of amino acid monomers linked by peptide bonds. They are distinguished from proteins on the basis of size, typically containing fewer than 50 monomer units.
More commonly, peptides are known as a common anti-aging skin care ingredient t. Peptides usually have hard-to-pronounce fancy names. Below are a few of them, along with some research behind each.
A few common Peptides are:
- Argireline® (Acetyl Hexapetide-3)Haloxyl
- Hyloxyl® (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7)
- Matrixyl® – Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3
Argireline® (Acetyl Hexapetide-3)
Argireline is known to be the best needle-free alternative to Botox. It is a peptide that has been shown to reduce wrinkle depth, especially around the forehead and eyes. This was proven in a study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2002. In this report, it was demonstrated that a cream containing 10% acetyl hexapeptide-3 used by healthy women volunteers reduced wrinkle depth up to 30 percent after 30 days of treatment.
In another study by Centerchem, an open label-trial of 5% Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 cream applied twice daily on 10 women demonstrated a 27% improvement in periorbital rhytids after 30 days as measured by silicone replica analysis. Theoretically, this peptide may mimic the effects of botulinum toxin injections.
Dr. Oz recently praised the use of Argireline in anti-aging products and eye serums and wrinkle creams! Any ingredient that earns the praise of Dr. Oz must be a great ingredient!
Hyloxyl® (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7)
Hyloxyl reduces dark circles around the eyes and puffiness, and restores the firmness of the fragile skin. This peptide does this by encouraging proper circulation in that area. Essentially, it counteracts the fluid buildup that occurs naturally when you sleep. Eyelid swelling is a common cause of puffiness and dark circles. When you lie down, gravity causes fluid to accumulate in your lower eyelids. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 counteracts this effect in addition to making the skin soft and smooth.
Matrixyl® – Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3:
Matrixyl is the trademark name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-3, one of the powerful peptide molecules found in the latest generation of high-end anti wrinkle skin care products. This breakthrough ingredient stimulates collagen production in the skin and can even give Botox injections a run for their money in the anti wrinkle department. Matryxil becomes even more effective when combined with other peptides.
Matrixyl is a solid anti-aging wrinkle cream ingredient found in many brands that use cosmeceuticals such as:
- Elite Serum
- Perricone MD
When these ingredients are combined, they create a powerhouse concoction that helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness!
