- Synthetic anti-wrinkle cosmetics ingredient, a substrate of Botox
- It is a peptide which is a fragment of SNAP-25
- Acetyl hexapeptide-3 is marketed as Argireline by the Barcelona-based research laboratory Lipotec
- Centerchem, the company selling Acetyl Hexapeptide 3, is based in Spain
How does Acetyl Hexapeptide 3 work?
- It works by relaxing the muscles in the face resulting in less wrinkles
- Hydrates the skin
- Assists with regeneration of the epidermal tissue
Acetyl Hexapeptide 3 is also known by its scientific (INCI) name, Argireline. It works by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters. When applied to the skin, Argireline relaxes facial tension leading to the reduction in facial lines and wrinkles with regular use. This resembles the effect of Botox, which reduces facial tension and movement by paralyzing facial muscles. Argireline has proven results when applied to the face for the purpose of preventing the formation of lines and deep wrinkles, by preventing the repetitive muscle movements that are believed to be responsible in large part for the wrinkles that form around the eyes, on the forehead and around the mouth. By reducing the muscle movements, Argireline protects these fibers from the repeated strain placed on them by the thousands of expressions that are made every single day. With less strain placed upon them, the collagen and elastin fibers are able to keep up their purpose of keeping the skin smooth and line free, dramatically slowing the appearance of the signs of aging in the form of lines and wrinkles in the face. For these reasons, Argireline is known in the skin care industry as the needle-free alternative to botox.
So far, the evidence to support the benefits of Argireline is overwhelming! In a clinical study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, acetyl hexapeptide-3 at a 10% concentration has been shown to:
- Reduce the depth of wrinkles up to 30% after 30 days of use
- Help reducing movement of facial muscles leading to reduce wrinkles and wrinkle depth
There are many other credible clinical studies to be found. It is also worth noting that since it is such a new discovery, there are no long-term studies showing its therapeutic benefits or its potential side effects. However, it has been getting praise for its short term benefits and is now a common ingredient in many skin serums.
Perhaps the most compelling argument for people who believe that Argireline is the best anti-wrinkle peptide is the fact that the peptide itself is a shortened version of Botulinum toxin, known best as Botox.
Our research showed that Argireline was first used in an eye serum by SkinPro, makers of the Elite Serum, which is reviewed on this website. In the years since it was first made, there have been many other companies, including a national television advertisement by Guthy Renker brands, touting its use of the ingredient in their product line.
There is no question that Argireline eye cream and serums are the best treatments for skin rejuvenation at the time of writing this post.
