Aging is inevitable for all of us. You can work out, eat right, avoid tobacco and alcohol, generally take care of yourself, but in the end none of us can beat Father Time. For some, the aging process goes smoother than others. We all know those who are in their 50’s or 60’s that can pass as 30-somethings. Not all of us are that lucky.
Other than our body shape changing as we age, there are many other signs of aging and it is most noticeable in the facial area with skin wrinkles. Those creases and fine lines (called “crow’s feet” around the eye area because of their branching appearance) in the face show that our skin isn’t what it used to be in our younger days. But while wrinkles are likely to creep up on all of us, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to combat it and age more gracefully.
What are Crow’s Feet?
These fine lines around the eye area are a result of years of muscle use in our face. Repeated engagement of these muscles causes them to break down over the years. Crow’s feet arise from all the normal activity you do. When you blink or squint, the muscles around the eye area are activated. When you smile, it’s in your cheeks. Multiply those actions over decades of use, all day every day, and you can see why the muscle tissue breaks down and leads to wrinkles in the skin.
Preventing and Treating Wrinkles
It’s impossible to put a stop to the actions that cause these wrinkles. You’re going to smile, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, every day for the rest of your life. You may not always have sunglasses on you, and the sun will always shine, so there will always be squinting. Or how about when you flip on the bathroom light first thing in the morning and the brightness hits you? These are actions that are going to happen no matter what.
While we can’t get rid of the causes of wrinkles, there are ways to prevent them with a few antiaging methods. A proper skin care routine is your first step. There are many eye serums, like the ones reviewed on this site, that contain powerful peptides, antioxidants and other collagen boosting ingredients that help restore firmness to the skin and eliminate free radicals that cause the breakdown of skin cells. Read our review of our favorite eye serum here.
It is important to also use sunscreen when out in direct sunlight. Even on a cloudy day, where you may not feel like the sun is beating down on you, it’s a good measure to apply it anyway. The sun wreaks havoc on the skin leading to dryness, cracking, and weakening of the skin’s layers.
Likewise, with regards to sunlight, make sure to have sunglasses with you on a sunny day to reduce the need to squint. Buy a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection and polarization for maximum effect. We can’t escape the sun, so always be prepared.
Lastly, add exfoliation to your skin care routine. Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells from the outer layer of your epidermis and promotes the production of new, healthier cells in their place. A good exfoliator will contain glycolic acid which promotes collagen growth, a key component in plumping up the skin, restoring firmness, and reducing wrinkles.
While we can’t escape the causes of eye wrinkles, there are many ways we can combat it. Follow these tips and you will soon be back to a more youthful appearance and not fretting about the aging process. We talk about other ways to look younger here on our site, so be sure to check that out.
